Project Overview

The Data for Change initiative is a national capacity-building initiative focused on advancing equitable social identity data (SID) collection and use across the community social services sector. In 2025, this initiative was relaunched in partnership with Findhelp | 211, CASSA, Logical Outcomes, and Services and Housing In the Province (SHIP), the project supports organizations in using data responsibly to better understand community needs, address systemic barriers, and improve access to services.

Project Objectives

The project aims to test Social Identity Data (SID) collection with a broader range of service users in order to better understand how to best support agencies in:

  • Collecting socio-demographic data in equitable and responsible ways
  • Using data to advance outcomes for equity-deserving communities
  • Socializing SID collection methodologies and the use of data tools across the community social services sector

Key Activities

This phase of the project focused on knowledge-sharing and capacity-building across community agencies in Durham, Toronto, York, and Peel Regions through the introduction of a new virtual learning model focused on scaling learning and impact. It featured a peer-to-peer sector learning series hosted by SHIP and Logical Outcomes, supporting shared learning and practical exchange across the sector. New elements included a Community of Practice hosted by CASSA and the Data for Change Knowledge Learning Virtual Hub, both designed to foster collaboration, enable ongoing learning, support data-informed practice, and strengthen collective impact across community agencies.

The Community of Practice, led by CASSA brought participating agencies together and served as a platform for troubleshooting, peer to peer learning and a place to gather support and resources. This included advancing the capacity and interest of agencies to collect socio-demographic data and to conduct data analysis for reporting and make improvements in the process of data collection.

Data for Change Knowledge Hub

Participants who were unable to attend the workshops throughout the series can access recordings and materials through the Data for Change Knowledge Hub. This hub is a centralized resource for community-based organizations across the Greater Toronto Area who are working to collect and use social identity data responsibly, thoughtfully, and effectively.
