Having the Conversation

The South Asian Vaccine Engagement Collaborative’s (SAVEC) series titled “Having the Conversation” is focused on exploring topics often overlooked in South Asian communities. By shining a light on these topics, SAVEC is most concerned with raising awareness on various social and cultural issues.

Description

This session covers mental health in the South Asian community. Viewers can learn about existing issues and stigma in the community and how to practice self-care as an outreach volunteer.

Description

In this hour-long session, experts Dr. Amrita Mishra and Sultana R. Jahangir explain why gender-based violence (GBV) has increased during the pandemic. The session argues that GBV has no cultural roots but is, in fact, a larger issue within society. Outreach workers are encouraged to employ an empathetic approach when engaging with communities across Toronto.

Description

In partnership with the Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention (ASAAP), this session reviews common misconceptions and educates viewers on vaccine engagement work in queer SAMEICL communities.

Pandemic Reflections

SAVEC kicks off 2022 with a webinar series titled “Pandemic Reflections.” The series looks at how different organizations have navigated the last year of vaccine engagement work. Above all, this is a space for us to reflect, share our work, and brainstorm new ways to uplift our communities.

Description

As we move to the third year of this pandemic, it is important to recognize that lockdowns do not have the same impact on everyone. It is considerably harder for certain groups living in Toronto to experience isolation periods whilst also supporting themselves and their families. This webinar is a closer look at one of these groups – namely, South Asian women. South Asian women are often assumed as primary caregivers in households and the duties that come with that title have increased in the last few years. Women are now also responsible for education, healthcare, and other responsibilities. In this hour-long webinar, SAVEC, with expert insight and comments from SAWRO and PCHS, will reflect on how vaccine engagement work is complicated when considering how lockdowns have negatively impacted women. This will ultimately demonstrate how outreach efforts and education is incomplete if it does not account for the lived-in experiences of the people receiving vaccines.

Description

The second session of the Pandemic Reflection series explores vaccine outreach in BIPOC communities. Paul Bailey from Black Health Alliance and Kim Wilmot from Black Vaccine Engagement Team join SAVEC to advocate for culturally competent and specific approaches to vaccine engagement. The session also briefly covers outreach work in 2022 and how to expand support services amidst the sixth wave.
